Starting childcare—whether for a six-month-old infant or a lively three-year-old—is a significant emotional milestone for the entire family. It is completely normal for both children and parents to experience feelings of nervousness, hesitation, or separation anxiety during the first couple of weeks.
As early childhood educators with over 18 years of experience, we have supported hundreds of North Shore families through this transition. Here are our proven, gentle strategies to help your child feel safe, settled, and excited about their new daycare routine.
1. Practice a Gradual Entry
Sudden, full-day transitions can feel jarring for very young children. Whenever possible, we encourage families to implement a gradual entry schedule over the first week:
- Day 1: Visit together for one hour during morning free play.
- Day 2: Stay for two hours; parent steps out briefly for 30 minutes.
- Day 3: Child stays through lunch (approximately 3 to 4 hours).
- Day 4 & 5: Child stays through afternoon nap and snack.
This phased approach allows your child to realize that whenever mom or dad steps away, they always return.
2. Create a Predictable, Loving Goodbye Ritual
Lingering uncertainty can increase separation anxiety. When it is time to depart:
- Keep goodbyes warm, confident, and brief: A hug, a kiss, and a cheerful phrase like “I love you, and I will see you right after afternoon snack!”
- Never sneak away: While slipping out unnoticed when a child is distracted may seem easier in the moment, it can trigger anxiety later when they realize you vanished without warning.
- Project calm confidence: Children are emotional mirrors. When they sense that you feel relaxed and trust the educators, they conclude that the environment is safe.
3. Bring Familiar Comfort Items from Home
Familiar smells and textures provide an emotional anchor during quiet moments or nap times:
- A favourite small stuffed animal or blanket
- A family photograph laminated and placed in their cubby
- A sleep sack or pacifier that matches their home bedtime routine
